Scow launching - Grandad’s Axe

By saltyone | May 31, 2009

The deck scow `Jane Gifford’ was rebuilt for at least the 2nd time since its first splash in 1908. Originally modeled on the great lakes scows they were the drays of the New Zealand coast, as shoal draft centre boarders, they maneuvered up creeks and took the ground on the coast, carrying loads of timber shingle and sand.
`Jane Gifford ‘ was relaunched at Walkworth after a complete rebuild by many volunteers, she will ply familiar waters once again taking groups out into the Hauraki Gulf.
